For decades, coffee has been grown around Lake Toba by the indigenous tribes, an ethnic group living traditionally in the north of the Sumatra island. Sumatra quickly became one of the first places where coffee has been grown on a large scale – the fertile volcanic soil, the equatorial climate and the altitude offering the perfect growing conditions for coffee.
Mandheling coffee is grown around this lake which is the largest volcanic crater lake in the world and Aceh by smallholder farmers who work together in structured cooperative partnerships to process and market their precious beans.
